When partners are planning safer, more comfortable cycling networks, the most useful questions are often place-based.
That’s why we’ve added a new area analysis tool to the Rider Comfort & Safety Map. Partners can now draw a custom area on the map and explore the trip activity Community Signal to Capability: A Repeatable Model for Inclusive, Measurable Active Travel Impact connected to that location.
Instead of only looking at the whole network, you can now focus on the places that uniquely matter for certain contexts.
The new tool lets you draw a custom shape directly on the map, then view trip activity linked to that area.
That area could be a proposed cycle corridor, a school catchment, workplace or business park, a university campus, town centre, development zone, funding area, or an event site.
Once selected, the map shows trips ending in that area and the common corridors riders use to arrive. This helps partners understand not just that people are riding nearby, but how they are reaching a specific destination.
The tool also provides a clear summary of the activity connected to the area you have drawn.

This gives partners a quick, privacy-safe snapshot of how much activity is connected to a place, who the area is serving, and how riders are engaging with the local network.
For example, a transport team could draw around a proposed improvement area and quickly see whether riders are already ending trips there, how many unique riders are represented, and whether feedback from rated trips is available. An employer could draw around a workplace and understand the scale of rider activity nearby, as well as the common routes people use to arrive.
The Rider Comfort & Safety Map already helps partners review rider feedback, route ratings, and reported issues across their community.
This update adds another layer of useful and practical insight.

For local authorities and transport planners, this can support project planning, prioritisation, and funding conversations. For employers, universities, and public health teams, it can help identify how people are accessing key sites and where targeted support could help more people ride.
In the example shown, a custom area has been drawn around the business estate where Love to Ride’s headquarters are.
The map highlights trip activity connected to that area, including trips ending there and the corridors riders use to reach it. The results panel also gives a quick summary of the selected area, including trip volumes, rider counts, rated trips, trip lengths, and rider frequency.
This quickly turns a broad city-wide map into a focused local view. It helps users move from “what is happening across the network?” to “what is happening around this place?”
That kind of view could be useful for a workplace travel plan, a business district, a proposed local improvement scheme or network investment strategy, or a local engagement campaign.
