The Love to Ride Blog

Creating a more bike friendly world

The journey to school is about so much more than just getting from A to B. It’s one of the few daily routines that can shape a child’s health, confidence, independence, and connection to their community.

When kids build active travel habits early, walking, biking, scooting, or taking public transport becomes the normal choice, not the exception. And those early habits can last a lifetime, helping create healthier kids today and more active adults in the future.

Over the past year, we’ve received a growing number of requests to bring Love to Ride’s behaviour change framework, programming and technology to a school's audience, particularly for children aged 12 and under.

In response, we consulted with school travel practitioners, teachers, school staff, parents and kids to understand what would truly work in busy school environments.

The result is a new school travel program shaped by that feedback and designed to make active and sustainable journeys to school fun and rewarding.

A key element of our program design is that it's easy for teachers and schools to take part in - they're all busy, so the solution has to be easy and low-friction.

A key design principle was keeping the experience frictionless for schools. Teachers are not required to register, create accounts or log in. They can participate and submit their class results with a minimum of fuss.

All modes - from biking and walking to scooting and busing - are available to be included in your school's program based on your goals and needs.

Our pilot program was even more successful than we anticipated for a small-scale trial. In total, 18 schools and 146 participating classes took part, generating an impressive 23,015 sustainable trips to and from school.
